  6. wanted to be like them. As it turned out, Steffi 
  7. would not be like her parents. Steffi would
  8. turn out to be the Number 1 tennis player in
  9. the world.

  11. SteffiΓÇÖs father, who ran a tennis club near
  12. their house, in Br├╝hl, West Germany, 
  13. coached Steffi. (West Germany and East
  14. Germany were separate countries at that 
  15. time. They merged to form one Germany in
  16. 1990.) When Steffi was 12, she won the 
  17. West German 14-and-under and 18-and-
  18. under competitions. The next year, she 
  19. won the European 12-and-unders.
